World Group I consists of eight countries that fight for the prestigious trophy in every season. World Group II consists of eight countries as well. Eight countries from these two groups will form the World Group I Playoff (four countries that lost their first round match in World Group I and four countries that won their first round match from World Group II).

The third level consists of Group One American Zone that consists of eight countries, Group One Euro-African Zone that consists of 14 countries and Group One Asia-Oceania Zone that consists of eight countries. In World Group II playoff round the four teams that lost their first round match in World Group II will play against two countries from Group One Euro-African Zone, one country from Group One American Zone and one country from Group One Asia-Oceania zone.

The fourth level of competition consists of Group Two American Zone that consists of 10 countries, Group Two Euro-African Zone that consists of eight countries and Group Two Asia-Oceania Zone that consists of 13 countries.The fourth level of competition consists of 22 teams in Group Three Euro-African Zone that fights for the place in the Group Two of the same zone.

Just like in Davis Cup, United States are the most successful nation in the Fed Cup, with 17 titles and 11 defeats in the finals. Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic are second with 10 titles, while Australia won 7 titles. Czech Republic is the reigning champion. Eleven teams won the title so far and Great Britain is the biggest loser, with four defeats in the final without a title.
