Kontinental Hockey League is a professional Russian ice hockey league founded in 2008. It has 29 clubs from several countries - apart from Russia, which has 22 teams, Belarus, China, Croatia, Finland, Kazakhstan, Latvia and Slovakia has one team each.

The Gagarin Cup is awarded annually to the playoff champion at the end of the season. Russian champion will be the highest ranked Russian team in the competition.The teams are divided into two conferences - Western and Eastern. In Western Conference we have two Divisions, Bobrov and Tarasov - in Bobrov Division we have SKA Saint Peterburg and Spartak Moscow with five international clubs, while in Tarasov Division we have only Russian clubs.

In Eastern Conference we have Kharlamov Division, that is all-Russian, and Chernyshev Division where we have Barys Astana and Red Star Kunlun of international teams.The Russian teams that compete in the league are not allowed to sign more than five foreign players, while the non-Russian teams have to have five players from their country.

The KHL was probably the most attractive during the NHL Lockout, from 16 September 2012 to 12 January 2013. Over 40 NHL players, mostly Russians, played in KHL during that period.In the previous nine seasons, only Russian clubs lifted the Gagarin Cup. Ak Bars Kazan, Dynamo Moscow, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, and SKA Saint Petersburg won the title two times each, while Salavat Yulaev Ufa lifted the trophy once.
